The ‘south Indian Kashmir of India’- Munnar, a hill station located in Kerala. This place has acres of dense jungle, along with rolling hills, wildlife, and waterfalls. Rich in history, one can never forget tea plantations and tastings, swimming in waterfalls, visiting wildlife parks, and being amongst the clouds with epic viewpoints.

People converse in Malayalam as it is their native language. Munnar is neither as radical as Delhi or Gurgaon nor as liberal as Goa. Although, it is a touristy place, hence it is common for tourists to wear strappy tops, dresses. In Munnar, it does get quite cold in the evenings, so bring a warm jacket.

The best time of the year to visit Munnar is during winter months since the weather is pleasant and the fresh chai from tea plantations makes the stay cozy. But, if one wants to experience Navatatri festival then hit this place during October. But, mind it the roads will be heavily crowded.

Travelling to Munnar

Munnar neither has an airport nor a railway station. Although, it does have a government bus depot. 

  1. By rail- The nearest railway station from Munnar is at Aluva, which is at a distance of 110 kilometers from Munnar. From this point, you can either hire a cab or board the state transport or private buses wherever available.
  2. By air- The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, which is 110 kilometers away by road. Hence, one can board that. From Cochin, you can hire a cab to get to Munnar.
  3. By roadways- There are plenty of state run buses for Munnar from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Although, driving to this earthy place could be a cherry on cake experience. However, traveling via buses is cheaper.

Accommodation

According to us, staying at resorts will be the best. Although, one can book hostels and b&bs as well. Tea country is quite known for ambience and food. Homestays are also available, however communication can be a problem as the native language is Malayalam.

 

Explore Munnar

  1. Visit the Tea museum- Almost everyone is a chai lover. This place is officially known as Tata tea Plant. The museum depicts the history of tea plantations and processing from earlier times. For adults, the entrance fee of the museum is 75 INR per head. For children between the ages of 6-12 years, the fee is 35 INR. Tata tea museum remains closed on all Mondays and on the occasion of Good Friday. Except that, the timings are 9 A.M to 4 P.M.
  2. Waterfalls- One will get enchanted by the dynamic waterfalls this place offers. Some must visit are Valara Falls, Cheerappaya falls, Kallar Falls and Lakkam Falls. Each waterfall is unique in its way. Don’t forget to click pictures and enjoy the serene beauty.
  3. Eravikulam National Park- This Park is renowned for mountain goats. It is the first national park in Kerala, a hub for endangered animals and wildlife. 
  4. Mattupetty Dam- This is one of the most enchanting destinations in Kerala. The Mattupetty reservoir offers boating facility and the hills nearby are ideal for trekking. 
  5. Anamundi- A Mountain, a trekker would never forget to visit. It stands tall in the Eravikulam National Park. The view from this place is worth the trek. This place is open for trekking on all days but closes after 6 pm. Beware of elephants.
  6. Lockhart Tea Factory- It is the oldest tea factory in the area that still produces tea today. Want to know about tea making. In their factory, you can go on a guided tour to see the whole cycle of tea production, from the wilting process to oxidation which decides which type of tea it will be, to packaging. And maybe then buy a packet or two. They also have a tasting area, café, and some fantastic viewpoints that you can relish in too.
  7. Tea Tales- An amazing place for tea tasting. One can try all sorts of teas like Munnar Green Tea, Pekoe Tea, even Rose Tea. If you are on a budget, you can skip the tea tasting and just roam around.
  8. Kalari Kshetra- An ancient temple of art forms. From Kathakali and Kalaripattyu, One can visit this place and enjoy the shows of varied forms. Timings for each show are different.
  9. Top station- One of the most beautiful places in Munnar, foggy climate and it will chill your mind. Located at a height of 1700 meters above the sea level. The roads are mesmerizing surrounded by tea plantations. A perfect place for camping. Attractions near Top hill are Top Station View Point, Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, Kundala Dam Lake, and Bluehood Camping.
  10. Cinnamon Gardens Spice Plantation- They have over 100 species of spices, herbs, and Ayurveda medicines. A little touristy, but if you’re interested to learn about spices and farms do hit this spot. 

Food

Besides delicious tea and dinner at Banana leaf, one should definitely try local cafes and stalls. Kerala cuisines are delicious and try it in an authentic way. Try local snacks, especially deep fried banana chips straight from coconut oil onto your plate.
